Volunteer Coordinator

Contract Length: 12 Months

Position Overview

Future Black Female is seeking a skilled and committed Volunteer Coordinator to lead the recruitment, training, and retention of a diverse volunteer network supporting our national and regional programs.

This role is central to building a strong, values-driven volunteer ecosystem that supports Black youth and women across mental wellbeing, financial literacy, education, and justice-related programming. The Volunteer Coordinator will oversee volunteers ranging from youth aged 16 to adults, including those engaged in sensitive environments such as programming with justice-involved and incarcerated youth.

The successful candidate will bring strong relationship-building skills, trauma-informed practice, and the ability to design structured volunteer systems that are responsive, culturally relevant, and youth-centred.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach

  • Develop and implement targeted recruitment strategies to attract diverse volunteers, including youth and professionals

  • Build partnerships with schools, community organizations, and institutions to expand the volunteer base

  • Ensure inclusive and equitable access to volunteer opportunities

 

Volunteer Screening and Onboarding

  • Lead intake, screening, and placement processes, including interviews and reference checks

  • Coordinate police record checks and clearance processes for volunteers working with vulnerable populations

  • Match volunteers to roles aligned with their skills, interests, and program needs

 

Training and Development

  • Design and deliver comprehensive onboarding and ongoing training programs

  • Ensure all volunteers are trained in trauma- and violence-informed approaches, anti-racism, cultural safety, and safeguarding practices

  • Support volunteers working in high-impact settings, including partnerships involving incarcerated youth

 

Volunteer Coordination and Supervision

  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation, hours, and impact

  • Develop schedules and coordinate volunteer assignments across programs and partnerships

  • Provide ongoing supervision, mentorship, and support

  • Address concerns, mediate conflicts, and ensure a safe and respectful environment

 

Retention, Recognition, and Engagement

  • Develop strategies to retain volunteers through meaningful engagement and growth opportunities

  • Lead recognition initiatives that celebrate volunteer contributions

  • Foster a strong sense of community and belonging within the volunteer network

 

Program and Partnership Support

  • Collaborate with program staff to identify volunteer needs across all Future Black Female initiatives

  • Support delivery of programs in community, institutional, and justice-related settings

  • Ensure volunteer integration aligns with organizational goals and program outcomes

 

Systems, Reporting, and Evaluation

  • Establish and maintain volunteer management systems, including databases and tracking tools

  • Monitor volunteer impact and contribute to reporting for funders and stakeholders

  • Continuously improve volunteer processes based on feedback and data

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in social work, community development, human services, or related field

  • 2–4 years experience in volunteer coordination, community engagement, or program delivery

  • Experience working with youth, particularly Black youth and/or justice-involved populations, is an asset

  • Knowledge of volunteer management practices, including recruitment, training, and retention strategies

  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches

  • Ability to lead, motivate, and support diverse groups of volunteers

  • Conflict resolution and problem-solving skill

  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

 

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed

  • Willingness to travel within Ontario for program delivery and partnerships

  • Eligibility to obtain a vulnerable sector police check
