UJAMAA Circles

UJAMAA Circles “UJAMAA” is a Kiswahili word meaning ‘brotherhood.’ The UJAMAA Initiative is about creating safe, supportive, and culturally relevant spaces for Black boys and young men to connect, heal, learn, and grow together.

ree

UJAMAA Circles are free group therapy sessions designed for Black boys and young men between the ages off 16 to 22 to show up exactly "where they are at" whether that’s ready to share or simply ready to listen.

Group support offers a unique kind of growth. You may find that hearing someone else share their story gives words to your own experiences or offers insight you hadn’t considered.

This series is rooted in community-building, accountability, vulnerability, and empowerment, and is led by a skilled, culturally responsive therapist Ola Kuforiji.

A Message from Ola

In an age of misinformation and carefully curated “clickbait”, – a genuine desire to improve one’s mental health very often leads to confusion at best. This is particularly true in relation to the idea of developing a healthy concept of “masculinity”, specifically Black masculinity. Together, we will explore what it means to be one’s “best self” in 2025.

Future Black Female, with head offices in St Catharines, Niagara Region, would like to acknowledge the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples, many of whom continue to live and work here today. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. Today, the home to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples is home to us too. We acknowledge the sacrifices made, forced and freely, by the Indigenous peoples of Canada in the formation of the country we call our home. As we acknowledge their continued contributions and their presence and ours upon this land, we are committed to being responsive to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and to our relationship with Indigenous peoples.
