Her Seat At The Table: A Case For DEI - A Panel Discussion

Join us at panel discussion titled “Her Seat at the Table: A Case for DEI,” which is part of FBF’s Black Women’s Economic Security (BWES) project.

This event is a collaboration with Brock University during the institution’s annual Co-op fair scheduled for January 28th, 2025.

The panel will feature inspiring women in leadership roles:

  • Khadija Hamidu, Vice President of Economic Development for YWCA Hamilton & Founder, Melanin Market

  • Zainab Awad, Health Equity Manager, Niagara Health

  • Karen Ogidigben, Manager, Training and Development LMS, Algoma Central Corporation

These Leading women will share their insights and experiences, offering a unique opportunity for employers, professionals, and advocates to continue the conversation about attracting and retaining diverse talent.

Why Attend?

Together, we will tackle themes such as:

  • Strategies to address barriers Black girls and women face in securing jobs and advancing to leadership roles

  • Creating inclusive environments with culturally competent resources

  • Practical advice on fostering equitable workplaces for employers, job seekers, and students

The event location is only a short walk from the Ian D. Beddis Gymnasium at Brock University’s main campus, where the fair would take place. Upon arrival, refreshments will be available

Why This Matters?

The BWES project, sponsored by Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE), focuses on breaking down systemic barriers that hinder the economic participation and security of Black girls and women, especially those transitioning from high school to post-secondary education and into the workforce. Through partnerships with schools, businesses, community organizations, and individuals, we aim to amplify Black voices, improve representation, and create equitable pathways to economic security.

By attending, you will gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges Black women experience in the workforce and how your organization can better support them – including the talented Black students you'll connect with at the fair. This is more than a dialogue; it's a chance to align your DEI goals with meaningful action.

This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. Today, the home to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples is home to us too. We acknowledge the sacrifices made, forced and freely, by the Indigenous peoples of Canada in the formation of the country we call our home. As we acknowledge their continued contributions and their presence and ours upon this land, we are committed to being responsive to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and to our relationship with Indigenous peoples.
